A man was arrested Thursday morning after he allegedly took a Viagra pill, authorities said.

Michael Nardone, 36, of St. George, Ga., was arrested in the 500 block of S. Foster Street in a special operation Thursday morning after he allegedly took a Viagra pill, authorities said.

Nardone, who had been working as a pharmacist in the 500 block of S. Foster Street, was also arrested in the 500 block of S. Foster Street.

The police said the arrest followed an investigation into the alleged use of the drug.

They said a tip-off was made from the investigation to the police.

Nardone was charged with possession of a controlled substance, which carries a maximum penalty of two years in prison and a fine of $1 million, according to the police.

Nardone has been in possession of Viagra for more than two years, and he has not been linked to any drug related offences.

According to authorities, Nardone sold the drug to a client at the time, which they said was because they were concerned about his sexual health.

Nardone's lawyer said the client, who was working with the drug's manufacturer, Pfizer, had no known health problems.

"Pfizer had been trying to market the drug for more than two years and the drug had not been approved by the FDA by the time this case was prosecuted," said his lawyer, Charles F. Fisseler, in a statement.

In an interview, Mr Fisseler said: "In my view, the client's health and well-being was not affected by the drug and the drug had been approved by the FDA and approved by Pfizer in 1998."

Pfizer was asked for comment.

"We are not aware of any other cases in which the client had used a drug that Pfizer had not approved for sale and/or for sale," Mr Fisseler said.

The statement said the client had been taking a medication called Erection Pill, which contains sildenafil citrate.

"Erection Pill is not approved by the FDA as a treatment for erectile dysfunction and is not indicated for treating premature ejaculation," the statement said.

The case was investigated by the Department of Health and Prevention and by the State Attorney General's Office, and a series of criminal proceedings were launched against the man and his partner for his role in the drug's distribution.

Mr Nardone was charged with one count of possession of a controlled substance, one count of possession of a controlled substance and one count of selling a controlled substance.

In June, the Federal Family Court upheld a verdict in the case.

The case is being prosecuted by Assistant State Attorney James S. O'Neill.
